Hydrogen Deuterium Q & A

Q: In Organic Chemistry problems involving H and D, why is C-H bond broken more readily in comparison to C-D bond?

A: The bond dissociation energy of C-H bond is slightly lower than the bond dissociation energy of the C-D bond. This has to do with smaller mass of H atom allowing faster vibrations making H somewhat loosely bound to C.
